Choose Your Branding Technique

At Golden State Box Factory, we have mastered five different branding customization technologies.

Your packaging, whether a custom wooden box or a retail display, is often the first point of contact your customer has with your brand. That first impression matters, and we offer a range of branding techniques to ensure your packaging leaves a lasting impact, reflecting your brand’s identity in a distinct and meaningful way.

Whether you are aiming for a sophisticated, timeless look or a bold, eye-catching design, each branding method offers unique possibilities. The right technique can elevate your custom boxes and retail displays, making them as memorable and impactful as the product inside.

Opt for the right Wood

The type of wood you choose for your custom box or retail display plays a major role in its overall aesthetic, functionality, and cost. We proudly offer FSC Certified wood, ensuring our materials come from responsibly managed forests. This certification guarantees your packaging is not only eco-friendly but also sustainable.

Different wood types bring unique textures, colors, and characteristics, influencing the look and feel of your packaging. Whether you’re looking for an affordable option for bulk production or a luxurious finish for premium products, we offer a variety of wood types selected for their beauty and durability.

Each wood type provides a distinctive finish, adding a personal touch to your packaging or display. With our FSC Certified options, you can be confident your choice supports both the environment and your brand’s commitment to sustainability.

Its light, natural color allows for easy customization with stains and finishes. Despite being a lower-cost option, pine provides an attractive, contemporary appearance, ideal for creating a warm and welcoming product presentation.
  • Cedar wood box

    CEDAR

Known for its natural aroma and moisture-resistant properties, cedar is an excellent choice for packaging that combines functionality with elegance. It’s often used for storing specialty items like cigars, jewelry, or even high-end candles. The rich, reddish tones of cedar add a distinctive warmth and character to the box, making it a favorite for premium products that require both protection and beauty.
  • maple wooden wine boxes retail displays and crates

Its light, neutral color provides a clean, modern look and ensures that any design or logo stands out beautifully. Maple is often used for premium gift boxes, fine furniture, and luxury packaging due to its durability and the elegance it brings to any project.
  • Walnut wooden wine boxes

    WALNUT

The dark, rich tones of walnut make it one of the most sought-after woods for high-end packaging. With its fine grain and deep color, walnut provides a luxurious look and feel that speaks to quality and sophistication. Often used for executive gifts, fine watches, or exclusive product packaging, walnut adds an unmistakable level of prestige that customers will appreciate and remember. It can be used merely sanded or with a clear satin varnish.

A practical, cost-effective solution for businesses that require a sturdy and reliable material for larger production runs, birch plywood offers a modern, sleek finish that holds up well to various types of branding. • birch plywood wooden wine boxes retail displays and crates

    CHERRY

Cherry is a smooth-grained, reddish-brown hardwood that comes from the American Black Cherry fruit tree. It is great for furniture or box making, with medium hardness, good stability, and a beautiful color and grain pattern. Generally a bit expensive due to its desirability, we, however, manage to get competitively priced supplies.
  • American oak wood box

    AMERICAN WHITE OAK

American White Oak has a distinctive grain and a blonde tone with slight pink undertones, making it a highly desirable choice for cabinetry, cellar ambiance, and premium wine & spirits boxes. To avoid color alteration from sunlight, we recommend applying a clear satin varnish coatinG.
  • redwood wine boxes

    REDWOOD

Redwood lumber is another softwood renowned for its beauty, durability, and resistance to decay. More than a hundred years ago, we were the first company to manufacture redwood boxes to carry ice packs. Today, we still make cedar boxes as well as fruit and cheese trays.
  • mineral oil finish on wood

    MINERAL OIL FINISH

Odorless and colorless, non-toxic, and food-safe, this classic finish deeply penetrates the wood, enriching its natural grain while providing a smooth, velvety texture. It maintains the organic feel of the wood while adding a subtle sheen that enhances its warmth and character. The oil is particularly well-suited for darker woods like walnut but works well on pine as well.

    VARNISH

Designed for durability, a varnish is a water- or oil-based resin finish that dries to a hard film, coating the surface of the wood. This creates a strong protective layer that helps resist scratches and stains. We generally apply a layer of clear satin or matte varnish over a previous layer of colored stain or directly on the wood to give the box a smooth touch. We avoid products emitting organic chemicals or VOCs and favor water-based finishes, Green Seal-11 certified, with Stain VOCs of less than 250 g/L and Varnish VOCs of less than 350 g/L. Our finishes contain no petroleum-based solvents, heavy metals, phthalates, or glycol ethers.
  • stain finish on wooden box

    STAINED FINISHES

Available in a range of tones, from light and natural to deep and rich, stained finishes highlight the wood’s natural beauty while adding color to it. This option allows you to customize the color of your box while preserving the texture of the grain. Colored or stained finishes do not typically deeply penetrate the pores of the wood. At Golden State Box Factory, we favor the use of water-based stains over alcohol or petroleum distillate solvents.

    LACQUER

When fully colored boxes are required, we spray a layer of sealer followed by a second layer of lacquer paint, creating a durable, waterproof, and breathable finish. Our lacquers are either acrylic or water-based, with the following options: Matt lacquer (10% sheen), Satin (50% sheen), and Semi-gloss (70% sheen). We avoid high gloss, as it requires too many layers of lacquer and intermediate sanding.

Select Your Wood Finish

The right finish enhances the beauty of your wooden box while protecting it from moisture, dust, and everyday wear. Without proper sealing, wood can fade, scratch, or lose its luster over time. A well-chosen finish preserves its quality while highlighting the natural grain and texture for a polished look.

Our selection of finishes allows you to customize both the appearance and feel of your packaging. A matte oil finish enhances the organic character of the wood, while a lacquered sheen provides a sleek, modern touch. Stained finishes offer rich tones that deepen the wood’s natural beauty, creating a striking visual effect.

Beyond aesthetics, the right finish also influences the tactile experience. A polished surface conveys elegance and luxury, while a softer, natural finish evokes warmth and craftsmanship. Whether you prefer a high-gloss shine or a subtle, understated look, our expert finishes provide the perfect balance of protection, style, and durability.
